By mid-January, most teams are already “back at it.”

The emails are flying. Meetings are on the calendar. Projects are moving. And many leaders are quietly wondering why things still feel… heavy.

That’s because January doesn’t automatically reset people.
If anything, mid-January is when the adrenaline wears off and what everyone carried in from 2025 starts to show up.

What I’m hearing from leaders right now sounds like this:
We’re working, but the energy isn’t there yet.
People seem tired.
The same tensions are popping up.

This is exactly the moment when an intentional reset still matters — and can make a real difference.

The Cost of Powering Through

When teams skip a pause and push straight through the start of the year, a few predictable things happen:

  • Stress from last year quietly becomes the tone of this year
  • Small miscommunications escalate faster than they should
  • Collaboration feels transactional instead of connected
  • Culture erodes through fatigue, not failure

By the time leaders try to course-correct, momentum is harder to reclaim.

The good news? It’s not too late.

A More Human Reset: Meet, Reveal, Align, Act

One of the frameworks I return to often comes from ORSC (Organization and Relationship Systems Coaching):
Meet. Reveal. Align. Act.

It’s simple — and it works because it reflects how people and teams actually move forward.

Here’s how it shows up in practice.

Meet
Meet people where they actually are — not where we wish they were by now.
Create space to acknowledge what the last year required of them, what they’re proud of, and what they’re still carrying. When people feel seen, energy shifts.

Reveal
Every team has patterns and unspoken dynamics. Reveal is about surfacing what’s real — without blame. What helped us last year? What drained us? What do we need more (or less) of?

Align
Alignment isn’t about consensus on everything. It’s about shared clarity. How do we want to work together this year? What truly matters? What are we letting go of?

Act
Then comes action — not a long list, not overwhelm.
Just a few clear commitments, small shifts, and realistic experiments that people can actually sustain.

Leadership Sets the Tone — Even Now

The way you start the year sets the emotional and relational climate for everything that follows.

Even in mid-January.

If you start with urgency, you’ll get urgency.
If you start with connection and clarity, you’ll get trust, resilience, and momentum.

You don’t need a big program or a perfect plan to start differently. Sometimes it begins with a pause, a better question, or a more honest conversation.

And if you’re thinking about how to create that kind of reset for your team — or want a sounding board as you do — I’m always happy to explore what support might be useful.

Either way, my hope is this:

Don’t let the exhaustion of 2025 quietly become the culture of 2026.
It’s not too late to start the year on purpose.
